The Need
There are currently 57 total Title One Schools (34 elementary) in Volusia County. These are schools with high numbers or percentages of children from low income families.
Studies reveal that food and nutrition contribute to better school academic and behavior performance. Teachers and administrators say attendance is higher, attention has improved, and children are empowered to learn when they come back to school after each weekend, well nourished.
The Goal
To reduce the number of hunger insecure elementary school-aged children in Volusia County by providing a weekend meal supplement directly in the hands of children in need and those whose family income is at or below poverty level. Our hope is that providing nutritious fuel will help the worst performing students improve in academics and behavior.
We unite donors and volunteers representing diversity around our common goal to end child hunger.
THE PLAN
1. Work with school principals and guidance counselors to prioritize all Title 1 schools and elementary families in Volusia County about this initiative. If interested, they fill out an application to be reviewed on a first come, first need basis.
2. If funds are limited and we can not provide for everyone who applied, we will target those in greatest need using the following criteria:
Income insecure (Title 1) (Guidance Counselors)
Lowest academic performance (Teachers)
Poorest student behavior (Teachers)
Worst attendance records (Teachers)
3. Academic and attendance performances is evaluated at the the end of each school year to ensure that this program is making a positive difference in their lives.
4. This program operates only within the academic school year. No food is distributed during the summer or extended Christmas recess.
5. Sample bag of food includes 5 meals and 6 snacks.
